A funny conversation with a woman who owns a CLS63 AMG earlier today made me think of the fastest car I've been in, how fast we were going, and how I ended up in the damn car. I'll pose the same query to you. Tell us all the details.
Unfortunately, I have to be a little bit of a hypocrite here. All I can tell you is that I was in a 2010 Ford Taurus SHO test mule in EARLY 2009 (before anyone saw it or test drove it), and the driver got it up to 145 MPH on the highway. It wasn't a Ferrari, or a Viper, or even a muscle car; it was a twin turbo'd family sedan. I'd give you more details, but it might get said driver fired. Sorry.
So what is the fastest you've ever been in a car, what kind of car was it, and why ("for the lulz" is not an acceptable answer)?

At the age of 16 I had been struggling with anorexia for three years. My parents and I had just landed in Orlando after a 9 hour flight from Heathrow and we were driving back to our home in a rental Dodge Avenger. I was so malnourished that I actually passed out in the backseat...my mother told me that my Dad actually hit 100 mph in the Avenger rushing me to the hospital.
Besides that, I've done 85 in my Grand Marquis. I've been told the driveshaft can't handle above 90-something.

Off the record, unofficially, I hit somewhere between 120-125mph while overtaking four or five cars on a very flat, straight two-laner in my car. It went from 60-120 in only a little over 10 seconds (estimate) which was impressive. It also felt stable enough. That being said, I have no desire to ever drive that fast on a public road again.

On a motorcycle, 130ish (speedo error) because had to keep up with idiot friend on his Duc.
In a car? I honestly have no recollection because my father is a terrifying driver and I didn't look at the gauges when he drove, but I definitely hit 3 digits in my Mercury because I was a pissed off teenager in New York.

Disclaimer: Speeding relative to the flow of traffic is dangerous and triple digit speeds are never excusable on open roads. That being said, there are two times I've almost pegged the needle in my E46.
First was driving home from my fiancee's (then GF) house. before 1am I was on the highway and an Audi TT got on next to me and kept pace, around 70mph or so. I crept up to 80, they crept up to 80. I nudged 90, and they passed me slowly at about 95. It was here I rolled on the accelerator and we hit around 115mph before I backed off and flashed my lights, as sort-of a "good show, chap".
The second (and last) time I went into triple digits I was coming back from some store, and a yellow Integra Type R pulled along side me. Surprisingly it was a neighbor that lived across the street; I had seen the car before. I rolled down my window and we exchanged pleasantries. The light turned green and we both drove down to the divided highway towards our neighborhood. A few lights later we were sitting and chatting, and I mentioned that "I wouldn't want to race you, since your car is so light". He responded that his extra passenger might make it a close one. The light turned green and we both took off. He was edging me out and when I looked down to check our speed my needle was almost at the 130 mark. That was the last time I'll ever hit those numbers.

My Monte Carlo down eastbound I-69 between Lapeer and Imlay City. Don't really know how fast was going. Speedo was pegged at 120mph and the tachometer was pegged at 6k. It was pulling past 120, so maybe 140-150? Some weird aero started taking over and the front end felt light so I got off the gas. I was 17. As for why? Well I had to validate that the Speedo would work up until 120 ;)

Wake up and the whole car is shaking and blowing all over the road...he can't even keep it in the lane. I'm like 'dude slow down' and he's like 'I'm only going 85 (the speedo maxed out at 85 and he had it pegged at WOT for a long time).

240 km/h, and it was to sell a brand-new 4-cylinder Dodge Journey SE.
A little bit of background:
At the time, I was a salesman in a Chrysler dealership (circa 2009). Since we had the biggest shop in the city, we also handled journalist press cars. On Monday, an auto journo comes in, pick up a brand-new SRT8 Challenger (with a manual) and leaves. He brings it back on Thursday with bald rear tires, asking for a new set.
The next evening, the car is done, but said journalist didn't come to pick up. We figured we might as well put that sexy Challenger up front to attract customers. About 15 mins later, a couple arrive in an older ram 1500 and start drooling on the SRT8. I go meet them and we start chatting about Mopars. Turns out the guy has a bitchin' 1970 Challenger R/T that he is restoring. We chat some more, and they mention their old Caravan recently broke and they need a new people-hauler.
I show them the base-model Journey, we go for a test-drive, they like it, the price is less than they expected, and they are about to sign. But during the whole process, I have to get the dude's attention, since all he is looking at is that SRT8 Chally in front of the windows. He also tells me multiple time how fast he drove his own R/T, and that he doubts the new one can go as fast.
Finally, I have a brilliant idea. I say: ''Okay here's the deal. You want to experience that Challenger, but you need that Journey. I'll give you a ride, and if I manage to scare you, you buy the Journey''. He immediately accepts. So I steal the keys from the service bay (I was 19 and there was NO WAY my boss was going to accept this plan, but I figured if I presented him a sales contract when he discovered the car was missing, it would go more smoothly) and take the guy for a spin.
On a wide stretch of highway with no traffic in sight, I opened it up. He was not stressed at 160, started sweating at 210 and at 240, he screamed: '' ALRIGHT I'LL BUY YOUR FUCKING MINIVAN, JUST SLOW THE FUCK DOWN!!!!!''.
Awesome customers. They came back a few months later with their finished Challenger R/T. He even offered me a ride! (due to the diff gearing, it only tops out at 185 km/h. I wasn't stressed.)

Allegedly i have gone 145mph as a passenger in my friends 2004 Audi S4. We were allegedly changing from one interstate from another. He mashed the gas (there were no other cars close to us) and as we hit the speed and let off to get back into the right lane for our exit we looked over and there was the undercover Taurus SHO that we knew was around. His window was down and he gave us a dirty look and kept going. (He was out of his jurisdiction so nothing he could do legally). Also that car is pretty sweet.
Hypothetically the fastest i have ever gone as the driver was in my Miata. I hypothetically got it up to 120mph with the top down on an empty road just to see how it would do. Not bad actually.

I was a passenger in a Ford Gran Torino at ~120+ MPH on a local highway when I was 17.
Haven't been close to that since then.
But I was once pulled over for going 30+ over... it was 3:30 AM, in a 45, there was no traffic and I was taking the wife's car (2004 Hyundai Accent 3dr / 5MT) to get filled up with gas, turned the corner, got to 5th, wasn't thinking (outskirts of town, literally zero traffic other than a guy who was fairly far behind me... oops) and kept on the accelerator. I was dressed for work, slacks, dress shirt, tie, and when the cop asked me if I knew how fast I was going I told him "no, I put it fifth and kept going, I didn't even look at the speedometer, I was just taking my wife's car to get gas" - the cop flashed his lights when he caught up to me as I was turning into the gas station.
Cop took my license and registration, spent 15 minutes in his cruiser, came back, told me "you need to be more careful son, I'm only giving you a warning, but if I catch you that fast again, I won't be as nice." And then he drove off. I've been damned careful since then (that was in 2005/6?)
(Figured that since my speed story was boring, I'd share something else)

(This was over 12 years ago, so I'm claiming Statute of Limitations, booyah!)
I used to have a long commute - 60 miles one-way - but it wasn't so bad. It was mostly divided SoCal highway (Hwy 62 through Yucca and Morongo) and freeway driving (10 East in the mornings, then West in the evenings), where you're like to be run off the road for going less than the prevailing speed of traffic. I would generally travel in the fast lane exclusively, since I was nearly always moving in a fast pack (generally about 15 mph over posted).
One fine morning, on a clear sunny day, having just merged onto the 10 in my anemic '95 Honda Accord DX, I made my way to the fast lane as per normal, and I was presented with a rare opportunity - straight section of freeway, slight downhill grade, a clear view ahead with not a single CHP in sight... Let's do this.
I wrung out that poor old F22B2 and 4-speed slushbox for all it was worth, and it pulled all the way up to 110 mph, where it hit the governor and subsequently fell flat on its face for about a second before allowing fuel to flow to the cylinders again. I was sad, because it felt like it had more in there. A few months after that, it developed a gasket leak and started making pudding. I maintained it as best as I could in that poor condition, but eventually seized a piston and threw a rod, and then had a new engine installed. Within about 3 months of that, it was stolen and never recovered.
I have been a passenger in a yellow supercharged Cobra 'Stang once, at very high velocities, but I couldn't peel my eyes from the road long enough to look at the dash, and it was a very short stretch of road where my buddy was showing off his handiwork. All I really remember is the acceleration, the pressure, pushing me deeper into the seat foam... it was incredible.

Yep. The entire time he was back in his car, I was trying to think of a way to get him to write a ticket that wouldn't likely result in a loss of license. To have him come back with a warning was the most amazing thing ever. I think the fact that I seemed to be telling the truth, was sober, and clearly dressed to go to work... coupled with the fact that it would be an excessive speed ticket without a clear method to establish exact speed, and that I had a clean record (single speeding ticket 3 years prior, 10 over in a 30, defensive driving class to wipe away points) all probably pointed to "let's scare the bejeezus out of this guy."
It worked.

I would play with my governor on my '96 Chevy Silverado (Vortec 350) on a stretch of road just outside of Bryan on my way to and from Austin. It kicked in at 99.

A relatively measly 117mph in a last-gen STI. I was a passenger. It was on a big highway, and didn't even feel that fast - we looked down at the speedo and were both surprised.

I'm almost certain he did, though the car wasn't his.
He worked for a guy who would buy up used Mustangs and either bring them back to stock specs, or give them some form of special treatment. I'm honestly not 100% sure what had been done to the particular Mustang that I rode in, but it had meaty, meaty tires in the rear and a certain unmistakable whine (and no, not like the failing throwout bearing in my current DD).
He didn't have reliable transportation at the time (a beat-to-shit '91 Dakota 4x4 with a failing front diff and a stoner brother), so his boss would often let him borrow one of the ponies. This one was a one-time deal, and I think he was only able to take it out for a few hours. I never saw it again after that, at least not in his possession.

I like to think of them as "Speed Suggestions", but since I live in Texas, it's hard to argue with a normal 75MPH limit. That's fair.

Ha. Then you know there are some roads that are pretty nice to play on. This was outside of Castroville, south-westist of San Antonio. There's even a two lane road nearby there with a limit of 70. This stretch also had driveways to houses and farms connecting. The Texas way.

Back in days of yore, I was following a couple of cars during a street race and clocked myself at 140 in my parents 1973 Chrysler Town & Country station wagon. 440 cubic inches baby!

Oh... and I forgot about the guy last year who wanted to show off his tuned Audi S6 (C5). I don't honestly know how fast he was going, but holy fuck was that car fast. He had just arrived at a party, and I was rather drunk (having been there for hours), and started talking about cars... one thing led to another and he said "you have to see what this thing feels like at launch" - it was the 4.2L with an aftermarket turbo and intercooler somehow rigged to it, with a 6 speed. It was basically a "poor mans" RS6.
I came back and realized I had just done the dumbest thing I had done in more than a decade. (I've done more stupid things, but they were not automotive related, and they will not be written about in a public forum).

Yeah, 70 on country roads isn't always the safest limit, but damn it if it isn't the most efficient.

Same with 145mph. In my '92 SC400 because …. err, I wanted to see what its top speed was?
Only lost 5 mph on its claimed top speed, 200k miles later. #1UZ
Obviously speeding like that is stupid, but where I'm from is the end of the expressway and it did when there was literally no other traffic. So I don't feel to terrible about it.

He was sober. I was not. Still, the guy was essentially a complete stranger who I had met literally 30 minutes prior when he drove up.
That's a good line to draw.

My friend is about to send his 700 HP GT-R to an outfit in Colorado to bump it to about 1,000 AWHP. We're supposed to take it out when he gets it back.
We were trying to figure out a hypothetical top speed for it. 220 is my guess.
